Why Use a Credit Card for business Tax ?

Payroll

Pay the IRD & earn up to 2 points per $1

Paying the IRD with your American Express through RewardPay can allow you to earn full reward points - rather than the reduced points typically applied when paying the IRD directly. For example, with an American Express Platinum Card, you could earn up to 2 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent. Using your credit card via RewardPay can also improve cash flow by giving you extra days before funds leave your account. At the same time, you earn valuable reward points on every payment—turning mandatory business expenses into real, ongoing benefits for your business.

For example

Pay NZ$50,000 per quarter on IRD payments with an American Express Platinum Card or American Express Airpoints Platinum Card and you’ll spend NZ$200,000 a year.

With the American Express Platinum Card, you could earn up to 400,000 Membership Rewards points annually (2 points per NZ$1 spent). Alternatively, with the American Express Airpoints Platinum Card, you could earn up to 2,857 Airpoints™ annually (1 Airpoints per NZ$70 spent) — enough to put towards multiple domestic flights or international travel with Air New Zealand.*

Plus, you can improve cash flow on a tax payment your business already has to make.

*Estimated points are illustrative only and correct at time of writing. Actual points earned may vary depending on your Card type, eligible spend, and American Express terms and conditions. Flight redemption estimates are indicative only and subject to airline rewards pricing and availability.

Unlock Significant Rewards Value

Every dollar you spend on your Tax or other IRD payments is a dollar that could be earning you rewards points. Unlike paying directly from your bank account where you receive nothing in return, using a credit card through RewardPay converts your tax obligations into points that can be redeemed for flights, hotel stays, gift cards, or cashback. For a business paying $40,000 annually in combined tax obligations, this could mean earning enough points for a return international flight or thousands of dollars in statement credits—value that would otherwise be left on the table.

Improve Cashflow

Improve Cashflow

Credit cards provide a crucial buffer between when your tax is due and when you actually need to settle the payment. With up to 55 days interest-free (depending on your card's billing cycle), you can pay your tax or other IRD obligations on time to avoid penalties while keeping your business or personal cash available for urgent expenses, taking advantage of investment opportunities, or waiting for customer invoices to be paid. This short-term financing is provided at no interest cost, unlike a traditional business loan or overdraft facility.

Consolidate and Simplify Payments

Paying all your tax obligations via credit card consolidates your IRD payments into your regular credit card statement, making reconciliation straightforward and reducing administrative burden. You'll have clear, timestamped records of every tax payment, automatic integration with accounting software if you use credit card feeds, and the ability to easily track and categorise expenses. Plus, you maintain a clear audit trail that satisfies IRD requirements while making your accountant's job easier at tax time.

RewardPay helps business owners pay tax and other business bills and earn rewards – so you get something back for your hard work.

Yes. RewardPay NZ supports payments to Inland Revenue (IRD) including income tax, GST, PAYE and other obligations. The IRD is pre-populated as a payee in every RewardPay NZ account, so there is no need to manually enter their details. Simply select IRD from your payee list, enter your payment reference number, and authorise the payment.

Payments finalised on the RewardPay portal by 5pm NZT on a business day will be processed the next business day, but may not show as received by IRD until the following business day. As IRD due dates carry interest and penalties for late payment, we strongly recommend submitting at least 3 business days before the deadline.

Yes. Amex payments earn your card’s standard Membership Rewards points on every dollar. On any payment method, you can also opt in to earn additional rewards with one or more of our loyalty partners by selecting your preferred earn tier at checkout (additional fees apply).
